RIP Rerun

i know that in everyone's love of elliot smith (and i wish i could write a wonderful soul-searching entry about him, but i never really listened to his music), the death of fred berry might go largely unnoticed. it's hard to miss it when a guy is in so much pain that he stabs himself through the heart. when an out-of-work actor has a stroke, there's significantly less furor.

when i was young in the eighties, What's Happening! came on every day after school. it was one of my absolute favorite shows. at this exact moment i'm humming the theme song and picturing rerun chasing after that truck. considering that i lived in an all-white suburb (and i'm not exaggerating, either), i had what might be called a surprising affinity for "black" television. fat albert, the cosby show, and what's happening! all ranked in my top ten. and don't worry, i'm not pointing out how enlightened i am because i watched them. just how much i liked rerun.

it's sad that people can get so caught up in being a character that they never really live it down. i'm glad that he finally kicked the rerun habit before he died. it'd suck to wear that beret in your coffin.
