comment vous appelez-vous?

so, first day of school. thankfully, i made it through without frostbite. and now i can name the colors in french!

but oh, the frustration that is commuting to college. i left at 6:30 this morning. a quick pit stop for some green tea and chex mix (it's got cereal in it, right?), and i was on the road. and...on the road. and...still. on. the. road. at 8:15. my class started at 8:30. i made it into the parking garage at 8:22. went up, up, up until i found a spot. dashed to class, ending up nearly 10 minutes late. learned french as well as one can learn french when the professor has forgotten her dry-erase markers.

but people, how hard is it to repeat what your professor is saying? even if it is another language? by the time it has gone entirely from one end of the room to the other, shouldn't you be able to say what your name is? mum says i expect too much from people, and that in terms of understanding languages i may be a bit beyond them. i mean honestly, why can't everyone just be perfect?!

then to the student center, where i caught a brief nap in a chair while killing time between classes, and bought the most disgusting odwalla bar known to man. superfood is green. and it tastes like everything in the world got mashed together and then they added raisins. on the bright side, the campus minimart also stocks vitamin water. yay for feeding the non-soda addiction!

my lit professor is a little scary. in that women's studies, feminist theory older academic woman kind of way. in that perfect fought-against-the-system-all-her-life kind of way. the kind of woman who can come down on you like a ton of bricks and doesn't understand why in god's name you can't do it all. i had a professor like that for gay and lesbian literature the last time i was in college. she was amazing and brilliant and very compassionate, but oh my maude the workload she gave! this one is looking to be no different. i should introduce the two of them; i bet they'd get on splendidly.

then i went to marshall's and bought a coat. did i mention it was roughly 20 degrees today (for you celcius nuts, that'd be -7)? that's without the wind chill. which took the temperature to roughly, oh, brass monkey balls cold. now, i have a very nice coat. denim with lots of fake furry stuff all around. and a hat and mittens, newly purchased last night at walmart. i. was. freezing. at one point i could no longer feel my face. and the hat? wind goes right through it. so on the way home today, i stopped at marshalls. came out with a lime green and orange scarf, a green hat, and a coat. a puffy down-filled coat that comes to my knees. i bought a puffy coat, and i plan to wear it. that should give you an idea of exactly how cold it is. but i'll be warm. ohyes, i'll look like the michelin tire man wearing a black coat with green accessories, but i'll be warm.

in other news, i have received departmental permission to add the advanced poetry class i was jonesin for, so you'll all get to see some new work from Academic Beatpoetgrrl.

really, this transition has been so smooth it's eerie. not to mention that sitting in a classroom today felt like heroin hitting the vein. i think i might actually be addicted to learning.

god, what a dork i am.
