gorgeous music, evil night.

last night was the long-awaited event-- the weakerthans at the first unitarian church in philadelphia. i am more in love with them than ever, of course. for one thing, they use a glockenspiel and a whirlywind. on stage, not just in the recording studio. it's quite something to look up at the stage and see the lead guitarist whirling a giant orange thing above his head like a lassoo. for another thing, the weakerthans have some of the most beautiful lyrics going. lyrics that read like good poetry; these guys would be right at home in a creative writing class, even the one run by my old professor and his excoriating critiques (he once compared my poem to mariah carey lyrics). there are moments of absolutely beautiful clarity and specificity. such as: "A soft breeze with the slippery concrete black and full of muddy slush, contrasting with the hoarfrost, clean and hung on a tunnel of silent shivering trees (without mythologies)." or "Her body is a difficult sister, and she loves her, and hides her somewhere in herself safe from harm (exiles among you)." it's enough to make a writer-girl weak in the knees. it was definitely worth all the hell it took to get there.

almost. but i'm sick of bitching about it, so i won't. -beatpoetgrrl
