greg once showed up to my friend's formal christmas party in a ruffled maroon tuxedo. it was the funniest thing, all of us trying to be serious and grown-up, and a spot of maroon floating around, like a relic from someone's bad prom.
we sang "somewhere over the rainbow" together once, on stephen's front porch at a summer party, without even a touch of irony. it was funny, and a little wistful, much like greg himself.
he loved jameson's whiskey, and hanging out with all the visiting writers, and the professors who invited them. he moved to new york a few years ago to become an actor, and i haven't seen him since.
he was killed in new york at 7:30 sunday morning, when the car he was driving hit a tree. i just found out today. he didn't have any ID so it took a while for him to be found.
and it's weird. i haven't seen him in years. but after i hung the phone up i started to cry. and pictures of him keep running through my head, and i just can't grasp what's going on.
goodbye greg. we'll miss you.
