warning: self-indulgent entry ahead

today i got my new driver's license, since i have a bad habit of losing my wallet. i got a new wallet too; it's red vinyl with an argyle pattern quilted into it. and a new purse that actually closes, to at least attempt not losing any more important documents. oh, and plushy socks with non-skid stars on the bottom, and a rubber mousy for the kittens. it was a good shopping day.

while i was looking for my birth certificate to take to the DMV, i unearthed a sheaf of my old "achievement certificates" from junior high and high school. recipient of the presidential academic fitness award (from papa bush). distinguished member of the high school drama club, senior year. recognition of participation in montclair college's program for academically talented youth. honor roll grades 7 & 8. SAT scores (ok if you must know, 690 verbal, 510 math). what happened? how did i end up 24 years old, not yet finished with undergraduate school, unemployed and living with my parents? by all counts i should have a bright future. how did i get so far off track?

i have a long-term plan; i know what i want to do. i want to go to grad school, preferably in new york. i want to get my MFA in poetry. ultimately i want to be a working writer, and i want to get certified as a poetry therapist. the trouble is the short-term, trying to figure out how to get where i want to go. trying to get back to salisbury and finish my last 20 credits of college. with money, i could do it now. but unless i find an extremely wealthy fairy godparent (and i am accepting applications for that position by the way), it's not going to happen any time in the immediate future. maybe september. if i get lucky.

the trip to the DMV is the highlight of my day, and so i'm going to end this entry with the highlight of my halloween instead: i met my first real drag queen at the party. and she was fabulous. and she complimented my feather boa. doesn't get any better than that.

tune in next time, same beat time, same beat channel. -beatpoetgrrl
