thoughts on ghosts and gender roles

i should be asleep by now. but for some reason i just can't seem to get there. and i wonder why i feel lethargic during the day-lit hours. possibly because i seem to do most of my living at night; it's what comes of befriending nocturnal creatures.

the day at the youth center passed quickly, because there were actually people there. the vaudeville vampires had a practice session in the garage. and appointed me as an official backup singer. i am a backup singer in a band. and not just any band--this is a funky, costumed glam-rock B-movie band. and for some reason that sounds appealing right now. i think it's the halloween spirit coming on. and maybe a little bit that i get to say i'm in a band.

after closing, to the diner for strawberry milkshakes and spooky talk of "ghosts-i-have-seen." there are some tentative plans for ghost-hunting sometime soon, and i think i'm joining in. it's so much easier now thanks to weird NJ. sometimes i think we should make a tv show about exploring scary places near us. then i remember that they have one of those already. but we'd be so good at it, since we do it anyway, and we'll do it for free! there are some houses yet to explore, and apparently a haunted cabin with strange creatures inhabiting the woods nearby. this could be quite an interesting halloween...

after the diner, to ward's house, where the boys played with their computers (i still don't understand the fascination with plain old hardware) and built a fire, and the girls played rummy and listened to the lemonheads' "hate your friends." it was really odd to see the group split along gender lines that way. usually we're more like the middle ground, with slightly feminine guys and less feminine girls, and even tonight there was crossover. such as the boy who is in no way interested in laughing at a computer magazine from 1993, or the girls who went out in search of lighter fluid. note to all: aqua net hairspray is highly flammable, however it doesn't last long enough for the charcoal to catch. still, it was odd to be in a room full of girls playing cards while the "men" were outside building the bigger-and-better-fire. mind you, this wasn't just some charcoal. it was a mini-bonfire, with sticks and branches and some old boards sitting atop a bed of charcoal. i can almost hear the grunting...

and now it's nearly sunrise and the paternal figure is sure to wake me early. or, rather, try to wake me early. it's not going to happen, no matter how much he thinks that the world should be awake when he is. is this something that happens to you in the army? do they have some permanent control over your biological clock?
