coming to terms

go read her diary. it makes sense to me...

i still think bush sucks giant monkey butt, don't get me wrong. but at this point, i can't do anything but hope for him. it's useless to point fingers in blame. blaming someone, anyone, isn't going to make this unhappen. it's never going to bring back the thousands of victims, or heal their families.

should the CIA have caught this? of course. did the US government commit atrocities in the middle east? undoubtedly. the US government funds the death of palestinians by giving israel guns and helicopters and whatnot. we funded saddam hussein to win against iran, and joined iran to fight against iraq. we trained osama bin laden to kick the russians out of afghanistan back when communism was the big bad enemy. not to mention vietnam, korea, and the clandestine operations in south america. but the people who lost their lives, whose body parts are being pulled from the wreckage, didn't have a single thing to do with american foreign policy. they were just going to work. they were just being the same people they were every other day of their lives. maybe they had a lunch date. or wanted chinese food for dinner. they weren't thinking 'how can i best oppress the rest of the world? we were attacked as a symbol of the western world, not as the big bad superpower we have been.

jerry falwell says it's the fault of homosexuals, abortionists and pagans. of course, it's their fault if it rains on the day of his golf game too. i'd like to say that he's a negligible person, but the fact is that people do listen to his crackpot ideas. but what really worries me is the fact of muslim americans being harrassed by mobs, of the realization that "american" suddenly means "white." the horrible fact that a mosque in texas was bombed. i am afraid of terrorists, but i am more afraid of the ignorance and hatred in my own country. and the fact is, the people who can perform such acts of hatred are no better than the terrorists they think they're fighting against.

i still don't know what i think about retaliation in a military sense. i know that the people who did this need to be held accountable; what i don't know is how to hold them accountable. and what if there are countries who refuse to hold them accountable? afghanistan has threatened military action against any country who helps the US...does pacifism preclude self defense? should i support this country in its talk of war? (i dislike bush, but i do trust general powell. if we had to elect monkey man, i'm glad he had the sense to pick a decent cabinet.) this isn't something that i'm going to figure out in a day. war is bad. but is there such a thing as a necessary war? a just war? can this government control its bloodlust? is it my duty as a pacifist to condemn any action that would lead to war? i wish i could make sense of anything right now.

in happy news, the Best Baby in the World walked yesterday! i wasn't there to see it, but i will tomorrow...she's a wonderbaby, my princess messyface.
