folkfest stories

i noticed last night at the diner that mira sorvino bears an eerie resemblence to mariah carey. the things you notice when the tv has no sound...

anyway. i should talk about Falcon Ridge Folk Festival stories because i did promise. we left thursday around 5:30 and drove and drove. when we hit the taconic parkway (newly rechristened "the gauntlet" due to its lack of any shoulder and the scary trees right off the road), we could feel the air changing. it smelled cleaner, it felt cooler. and then a blue heron flew over the road, it's legs trailing behind. it was gorgeous.

arrived in the middle of a field in the pitch black and had to set up our tent. ward and chris insisted on doing it themselves without directions, so it took about an hour...eventually we figured out why it was only about half as tall as it should be, fixed it, moved our stuff in, and tried to sleep without freezing to death. friday we lazed around, met our neighbors, went to the itty-bitty grocery store (they had the pasta next to the toilet paper), lazed some more, met some boys from conneticut who camped next to us, and friday night we got a little drunk. ok i got a little drunk. everyone else got a lot drunk, and ward greeted every single passerby, including some people who were looking for "a ragamuffin with a kitten." dressed for bed in sweatpants, two pairs of socks, a sweater and a sweatshirt. crawled under two sleeping bags.

woke up obscenely early saturday morning due to the immense heat. peeled off a few hundred layers. wished for a shower and a toilet that flushed. met the rest of the CT boys, and some more people from jersey who were experiencing altered states of consciousness. got yelled at by one of our neighbors for being too loud friday night. she had kids. she was in the noisy camping section. call me crazy, but that's just irresponsible. they have a section called "family camping .

then i took a deep breath, got a bottle of water, and headed down the hill to Festival. a whole little village of music and dancing and vegan food and little booths selling crafty stuff and instruments. i learned what a dulcimer was. i heard jian gomeshi (lead singer of moxy fruvous). listened to part of the bob dylan tribute set. walked some more. went back up the hill to doctor my blistered feet and eat lunch.
